Born as Norma Jeane Mortenson in 1926 in Los Angeles, she had a difficult childhood: her biological mother abandoned her and she was forced to live in foster homes and orphanages.

In 1942, she married her first husband, Jim Dougherty, and began working in an aircraft factory during World War II.
