Amazing records and trivia you may not have known about the Oscars
The Academy Awards represent the most important moment and the highest recognition for all workers in the film industry.
From 1929 to the present day, many memorable moments have taken place during the famous Oscar night, and there have been many awards in more than 90 years.
However, there are some really curious records and records concerning the most coveted awards in cinema, from the actors who have received the most nominations without ever winning to the shortest performances (even 5 minutes) that have nevertheless been rewarded with an Oscar: here are some of these particular records!
The Oscars: the most important moment and the highest recognition for all workers in the film industry
From 1929 to the present day, there have been many awards in the more than 90-year history of the Oscars. There are, however, some truly curious firsts and records concerning cinema's most coveted awards: from the actors who have received the most nominations without ever managing to win, to the shortest performances (even five minutes) that have nevertheless been rewarded with the statuette.
Walt Disney's incredible records
Walt Disney was the king of animation and his contribution to the world of cinema (and beyond) was evident and also certified by numerous records. Disney, in fact, is first and foremost the filmmaker to have received the most nominations in the history of the Academy (59), but he is also the one who has won the most awards (26, almost all for best short film) and who has received the most nominations in a row, in no fewer than 22 consecutive editions, between 1941 and 1962.
Actors who have won two Academy Awards in two consecutive years
Winning an Oscar is already not easy, let alone two in a row. In fact, only five actors have reached this prestigious milestone: Luise Rainer (1937-38), Spencer Tracy (1938-39), Katharine Hepburn (1968-69), Jason Robards (1977-78), Tom Hanks (1994-95). Katharine Hepburn holds another important record: no actor has won more Oscars than her, no fewer than four, always in the Best Actress category.
Who has received the most nominations in the Academy history?
Meryl Streep may be equalling Katharine Hepburn's record, having won three statuettes between 1980 and 2012. In any case, the actress can console herself with another record: among her colleagues, in fact, no one has received more nominations than her in history, 21. In second place tied are Jack Nicholson and Katharine Hepburn herself (both with 12 nominations).
Actors with the most nominations and no wins
She has often been called Meryl Streep's 'rival' and Glenn Close can also boast a record, albeit a slightly more bitter one. No one has received more nominations than her without ever having won the infamous statuette: 8 nominations between 1983 and 2021, 0 wins, a negative record shared with Peter O'Toole.
Oldest person to win Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Glenn Close must not lose hope, because victory can come even at a late age, as happened to Jessica Tandy, who at 80 years and 292 days won the Oscar for Best Actress (the first and last of her career), setting a record for seniority. The film that won her the statuette was "Driving Miss Daisy".
Oldest person to win Best Actor in a Leading Role.
The oldest actor ever to win as a leading man was Anthony Hopkins in 2021, at 83 years and 115 days. The actor's second Oscar came thanks to his performance in the film 'The Father'.
Youngest person to win Best Actor in a Leading Role.
From records of seniority to those of youth: Adrien Brody is the youngest actor to have won as a leading man, at 29 years and 343 days, having starred in 'The Pianist'.
Youngest person to win Best Actress in a Leading Role.
The youngest person ever to receive an Oscar for a lead performance, however, was Marlee Matlin, who won in 1987 at the age of 21 years and 218 days.
The shortest Oscar-winning performance ever
Five minutes and two seconds: that was all it took for Beatrice Straight to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the film 'Network'. Incredible record for brevity!
Actors who have won posthumous Oscars.
"Network" is a film characterised by another peculiar Oscar, as the winner for Best Actor in a Leading Role was Peter Finch, who died two months before the award ceremony, becoming with this recognition also the first actor of Australian nationality to receive an Oscar. An incredible coincidence with the late Heath Ledger, also Australian and also a posthumous Oscar winner, thanks to his unforgettable performance as the Joker in the film 'The Dark Knight'.
Actors honored for the same character
With Joaquin Phoenix, Heath Ledger is one of only three pairs of actors awarded for playing the same character, the Joker. The other two pairs are Marlon Brando-Robert De Niro (Don Vito Corleone) and Rita Moreno-Ariana DeBose (Anita from 'West Side Story').
Actors who have received two nominations for the same character years apart
Same actor, same character, multiple nominations: the actors to have achieved this are Sylvester Stallone, Bing Crosby, Paul Newman, Peter O'Toole, Al Pacino and Cate Blanchett. Stallone does, however, hold the record for the longest time gap between the two films that allowed him to join this select group of actors: 39 years between his first nomination with 'Rocky' (1976) and his last with 'Creed' (2015).
The film that received the most nominations without winning in any category
Incredible this record. Two films received 11 Oscar nominations and, surprisingly, did not win a single statuette: the first was Herbert Ross's 'The Turning Point' from 1977, the second was 'The Colour Purple' by Steven Spielberg (1985).
The film that won the most Oscars but not the one for "Best Picture"
"Cabaret" starring Liza Minnelli and Michael York managed to win 8 Oscars, but not Best Picture: incredible, given the number of awards this feature film received. In second place in this ranking is 2013's 'Gravity' with 7 statuettes, but without Best Picture.

The American Film Institute, an independent non-profit organisation created by the National Endowment for the Arts and dedicated to the preservation and promotion of historical films, has produced several rankings relating to the world of cinema.
Among the rankings made, one of the most interesting is that of the Top 100 Villains in the history of cinema, basically the best antagonists or simple villains who have remained imprinted in the memory of the audience.
In the Top 100, Jack Nicholson, James Cagney, Robert Mitchum, Faye Dunaway and Bette Davis are the only ones to appear with two characters. Here, according to the AFI, is the Top 10 best 'villains' in film history.
